2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon Recap |
One of the best things about doing races in new cities is that it’s so easy to get lost in the run and surroundings. So easy, in fact, my garmin clocked my first mile at 7:22, which I still don’t believe but I made an effort to slow down a little. I didn’t look at my garmin much more after that. At mile 6, I looked and had been running for 56:30.
By the time Mile 10 came around I could feel my lack of distance training. I was hot, tired and not happy at all. But just like at hood to coast, my dad, who passed away a year ago unexpectedly managed to send me a reminder that he’s with me. At mile 10, I saw a Mobile Classroom and not just any, one that he had sold to the school. How do I know? He had a unique sticker he used to put on every building and amongst all the paint, I saw it. I’m pretty sure I cried for the next half mile or so. I told him Thanks and started running again.
It’s a great race and I would love for you to run with me (See my recap from last year). Sign up now! If you use code “momslrb”, you’ll get $10 off.
Wow, what a feeling that must have been to get a sign from your dad like that. I totally believe in that kind of thing, and I’m glad that it got you going again. Good job for finishing in spite of your lack of training.
It was just what I needed at that moment. He always seems to know when to pop up.
Goosebumps! I absolutely love that you saw the sign from your dad. I think there are signs everywhere, we just need to open our eyes. He most definitely was there with you, Katie!
Congrats on finishing strong despite the heat!
It gave me goosebumps too. It’s crazy how he still finds ways of connecting with me. 🙂 I miss him so much.
oooh see?
if running were ALWAYS like a dance club Id be in in in!
Stick with the Rock n Roll runs and it will be.
a little jealous you had a race to enjoy, pretty dead here in Austin during the summer unless it’s a Tri. Congrats on the finish and getting to spend time with hubby!
I can only imagine how hot it must be in Austin. Thanks!
SOrry I missed you! Even my secret ‘cheapo’ parking lot a mile away has doubled in price this year. Easy to get in/out though. What a cool sign from your dad!
It’s ok. I’ll be up there again soon. You could always come down and run the RnR STL in October. 🙂
Sounds like a fun weekend! Races in the heat are tough- you did awesome. Wish I could do the October race with you but I’m already signed up for one in NJ… maybe next time! 🙂
Oh dang! I would love to start a race with you. 😉 Then you could take off.
What a fun race! I have done this race in the past and it was a fun time, despite the heat. Seems like you did what was best for you, which is obviously most important. That meal at Wendy’s looks delish!!
Thanks! I was ok with the outcome. Wasn’t my best race but I’ll take a completion. 🙂
You’re awesome – I can’t fathom doing a half right now! Looks like the whole weekend was a blast though!
Thanks! It was a good get away. We needed a little adult time.
Great job! I can’t believe that guy dribbled bballs the whole way! When I did harrisburg marathon in 2011, a guy JUGGLED the ENTIRE 26.2 miles!
I can not even imagine juggling while standing still let alone running for 26.2. NUTS!
What a great race, I am so happy for you! 🙂
Thanks Tasha! Wish I would’ve been a little more prepared but I’ll take it.
So awesome! I wish I could have ran this race! I love Dr. Dribble!!
Dr. Dribble was awesome!
Great job Katie!! Sounds like a pretty great weekend in Chicago and with your husband. I do totally believe in signs – they are everywhere once we start to look for them. I’m glad that your Dad was there in spirit with you.
Sounds like an awesome race!
Way to go mama!
Wow! How amazing that your dad was pushing you along! Great post!
