So, I can’t say I’m a full convert but I have definitely changed my view on morning workouts.
What changed exactly? Necessity, plain and simple.
You would think that with school out of the way, I would have PLENTY of time to workout and live the rest of my life but sadly, that is not the case.
For some strange reason, life has gotten crazier, and most of that “crazy” happens right during the time I’m usually trying to workout. After about a two week stint of not getting my workouts in, I decided:
enough is enough…
It was time to decide just how passionate I was about staying fit and recommit, which is what my “No New Year’s Resolution” post was basically saying.
Stop waiting and start doing!
So I did. I have been getting up. I have been running and I have been LOVING EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF IT.
I really never thought I would utter those words.
- I love the fact that it’s dark and I’m the only one on the trail.
- I love the fact that I can look up and see the stars
- I love that it’s cold and quiet and I can see and hear my own breath
I had NO idea that I could love like this. Every ounce of me wanted to NEVER be a morning person. I can’t say that I’m going to do it everyday but when the situation necessitates it, I can honestly say, I’ll be able to make the adjustment.
But there have been some unintended effects of my newly found morning workout obsession. Many of you morning people will read these and say “Well duh” but remember, I’m new at this.
- I get to work a little earlier. Weird huh? I guess because when I’m done running I just get busy getting ready for work. On mornings when I don’t run, I’m a little slower getting ready.
- I really want to cut my hair off. This is probably the only real negative. I have to now wash my hair in the AM and getting it all dry and looking presentable for work is a challenge. So every morning I think about chopping it.
- I need caffeine at 2:30. I love the high I feel knowing that my workout is over but I do notice my energy start trailing a little in the afternoon.
- Earlier bed times. Right now, it’s 9:30 and I can tell you, as soon as this post is done, the lights are going off and I’m going to sleep and that’s ok.
- More productive. I think it’s the runners high making it’s way into the rest of my life which is awesome. I use to hate early AM meetings but now, I don’t mind at all.
So I’m excited again. I’ve kicked my rut to the curb, I’m back at it and it feels fabulous! I’m loving my morning routine.
When do you work out? What’s the best part about working out then?
Happy Friday! Oh and GO CARDS!!
YES to all the above. That is why I am an early morning workout kind of gal. Great job in finding your mojo again!
I like working out earlier as well because there is less to get in the way of my workout. If I do it later in the day, there is always a chance that something may come up that would prevent me from going. Also when I work out in the morning I find I am more likely to consistently eat healthy throughout the day.
The only drawback that I’ve found is that my energy level just isn’t the same in the morning compared to later in the day. I find I get tired easier when I do it first thing in the morning. Maybe someone has a suggestion about that. Thanks for the post!
i’m totally a morning worker outer! itz done for the day and i’m so wiped after school anyway! the hair thing is definitely the downside… i rock lots of ponytails, buns, and wet-scrunchy-gel hair lol
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE MY MORNING
after that it’s all everyone else.
xo
Katie, I’m right there with you. My building threw a huge wrench in my now coveted morning workout routing by turning off the power from 5-6 am. I’m still not happy, but I was livid yesterday when I got the email. It was like they were trying to screw up my Friday.
I too find I’m more productive, and more energetic. But if you ask me to stay up past 9:30, you are nuts.
I don’t know how I kicked caffeine, but I know you need it you busy bee you!
#2!!!! Me too. Me too. I also want to dye it brown. I go through this once a year lol
Yes! Morning is the best time to run–it really does set the tone for the rest of the day. But I will agree, the exhaustion at the end of the day (early, early bedtime!) is tough.
Good for you!!! I’m really inspired by this! I think the showering thing would be my biggest downfall though…not ready to part with the long hair quite yet. 🙂
well Duh! I didn’t used to be a morning person either until a shift change at work (years and years ago) turned me into an opener instead of a closer. A match made in heaven. Fortunately my husband is the same way. We’ve put in many miles together before the sun comes up!
I used to go to the 5;30pm class at my gym. When I was pregnant, they changed class times and only started them on the hour. Since i got off work at 5pm, I did not want to waste time waiting for class to start, so I started going at 6am instead. It was AWESOME. And a few weeks ago when I started insanity, i did my first 2 weeks at 5am since my husband was already gone. That was a great change of pace, but now its not possible to get out of bed when he is still laying there. I just cant do it!
That’s great that you are loving your morning routine! I used to be a morning person but my clock has totally been switched. I do want to get back to it though! I was so much more productive!
I’m not ready to commit to morning workouts – but I DEFINITELY miss them! Especially that burst of energy in the mornings. The best part is when you TOTALLY FORGET that you worked out.
I’m so tempted to cut my hair right now, but my hairdresser won’t let me until after I take holiday pictures. She has a point! Lol.
My morning workouts are totally sacred. Recently, they’ve been crashed by #2 kiddo (jogging stroller for runs and pumpkin seat next to me at spin) but that doesn’t bother me at all 🙂
I too have given great thought to a hack job on the ol’ frizz-machine…but who has the time for a haircut?? 😉
