Why I Won’t Follow You

July 14, 2014 9 Comments

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I think I just need to get this off my chest.

I hate the term “followers”.  If you ask me to “follow” you, chances are I won’t.  I don’t think of the people I’m connected to on social media as followers.  I consider you friends, many I’ve never met in person but slowly we are meeting and that’s awesome!

So ask me to “connect” or “engage” but don’t ask me to “follow” and I won’t ask you!

Do you have any social media pet peeves? What drives you crazy?

I do NOT like those auto-DM’s on twitter. Instant UNFOLLOW for me. 🙂

OMG glad it’s not just me!! I literally hit unfollow the second I get one of those…I don’t know why it bugs me so much

um, it bugs us because it’s just so annoying and impersonal. i also really hate them! especially when the DM says “like me on FB!” or something self serving like that. ugh.

Love the ‘connect’ or ‘engage’ verbs instead of follow. I know that I don’t have big numbers on social media but I cannot bring myself to go around ask for follows or say that I’ll follow if you follow me. I’d rather people click that button if they truly are interested in the conversations I’m having and want to engage with me. I also consider people I connect with on social media friends, and if all they ever post are giveaway links and pushed through instagrams…they clearly aren’t interesting in having a conversation.

TOTALLY agree! I always eye roll when I see other bloggers or social media people asking for follows–especially those, “I’m so close to 200!! Please follow me!!” Um, no.
I don’t want to beg or force people to read my blog or engage with me on social media–I want it to come from THEM.

My pet peeve is when people start with “well…” or “Ok…” Sometimes, they do both: “Ok, well..I was on my way to work…..” When you write, you don’t need the filler like when you talk. I know I’m probably weird.

Ohh the auto DM’s are the worst! I hate them! I was on Twitter LONG before I started blogging. It started out with my high school and college friends, then health and fitness accountability friends and not bloggers and companies that I like. But ask me to follow you and I will not!

The auto replies that say now follow me on this and that and this too.
Sorry, I just unfollowed you for that!!!

I’m with ya! It’s so aggressive to me: I followed you now you need to follow me. Nope, I didn’t ask you to follow me. If you like what you see and you want to stick around, I’m thrilled to have you. If you’re only in it for the numbers, you’ll need to find someone else. It misses the whole point of blogging for me!
