If there’s one thing I love more than fitness, more than running it’s family and I’ve got a pretty amazing one (and I’m sure you all do too). But today has reminded me just how important they are. Let’s start from the beginning…
Back when it was just my brother, sisters, my parents and I we use to go to Florida every Christmas, to the same town, the same condo complex and without fail, we would meet up with the same families and just enjoy a laid back week on the beach.
While my mom chased us kids around, my dad would take the time to unwind in the condo, he wasn’t much of beach guy but he wasn’t there for the beach..he was there for us.
That tradition has continued till this day. Now with kids and families of our own, we are all on a rotation and that’s ok. The fact of the matter is it’s still a priority to get to Florida for this week. For the past few years, five or six, we’ve been mixing it up so we haven’t been back to this particular condo complex since before my dad passed.
So to say it’s been a little bittersweet to come back is an understatement but after 12 hours of traveling by plane, car, whatever, my entire family is back…right here…together…tired, exhausted and reminiscing about all the memories this place holds. There was a moment when we were all sitting around the table and just happened to pause and look over at the one place my dad would always sit which oddly enough, no one sat in, not even the 6 crazy kids running around like little banshees.
I know he’s here…I can feel it. I know he’s proud that we’re passing on this tradition to our kids. It just reminded me that despite how crazy our lives get, despite the massive amount of work it takes to get a family of four with two small kids ready and out the door for a week, it’s absolutely 100% worth it.
I hope that you are making memories of your own this time of year and holding your loved ones tight!
