If you’ve read my posts for any length of time, you’ll know that, right, wrong or indifferent, the blog and fitness are not my only careers. I have a day job that I actually like (read about a day in the life). It does, however, have me behind the desk a large part of the day and that is not always good especially when things get stressful.
One of the questions I get asked a lot is:
How can I relieve some of the stress during the day?
I always answer the same way:
1. Drink more water
2. Get up and walk around
I seem to hold onto stress in two primary areas, my shoulders and lower back so these 5 stretches to do at your desk are essential to keeping things loose and stress-free.
2. Finger Stretches- Again, we want to reverse the effects that keeping our fingers locked and loaded over the keys all day does to our wrists.
3. Neck Stretches – I said it earlier but this is one of the spots I store my stress, right at the base of my neck. Gently pulling on each side will challenge those muscles to give a little and give you some much needed relief.
4. Neck Stretches – after you’ve done each side, rotate backwards and forwards.
5. This is really more yoga I guess, but it’s basically a standing cat pose- arch the back and stretch out all that stress. This is a HUGE one for me. At any given time, if you walk by my office, you will see me doing this or any of the other stretches.
If you like these stretches, you can add them to the exercises you can do at your desk and make what was a pretty sedentary day, work for you rather than against you.
What do you do to relieve stress at work? Do you like to stretch?
