Kind of feels like deja vu but here I sit, in ANOTHER hotel room in the middle of America missing my babies. Luckily, this is only one night and hopefully, if all goes well, I’ll be home to tuck them in tomorrow.
One thing I’ve learned in all this travel is that you have to stay positive. It’s tough but it’s ABSOLUTELY necessary. So tonight, my silver lining is getting to talk to you and answer some questions you’ve been asking lately that I’ve not had a lot of time to answer.
Question 1 – How do your runner’s hands look these days?
HA! Well, I can honestly say, a little more beat up and that’s ok by me! What’s the significance of the question? Well, awhile back I shared some of my first experiences with Ninja training and how some of the regulars there accused me of having “Runner’s Hands” (Read about it here). He was implying that it was obvious by my hands, that I didn’t do much else besides running and I took a little offense to that but I’ve since gotten over it. I am working a LOT more on upper body and I can see improvements on the monkey bars but I can also see it in my hands.
Question 2 – Do you mind sharing your supplement routine? Also, how do you manage your food? Do you have different meals than your little ones?
My philosophy on supplements is the fewer the better. Right or wrong, I chose to get as much out of my food as I can so as not to need to supplement too much. I will say, however, right now, I’m supplementing and maximizing my workouts with GNC’s Pro-Sculpt. It’s a supplement in drink form, I take about 30 minutes prior to every workout and after really tough workouts, I load up on protein. That doesn’t necessarily come from a supplement..most times it comes from chocolate milk but I do make a special point to take in more than I would normally.
I do take a multi-vitamin and right now, I’m loving Airbornes chewy supplements with extra immune support.
Food..oh boy. The HONEST truth is, and I know this is going to sound cliché, is that I just try to eat sensibly. I have a HORRIBLE sweet tooth and I’ve tried before with NO success to kick it (read about my experience here) so I stopped trying. I keep it in check but I NEVER deny. I’ll have a little bit then find something else.
As for the kids, they do end up eating a little differently than us mostly because they are on a different schedule. They want to eat right after work where Scott and I don’t usually eat till later. So they mainly eat leftovers or I get a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store and they eat that. They love a lot of what we eat so I don’t end up making to many “special things”. Like now, while I’m traveling. I made a little extra quinoa from our dinner on Monday and they’ve eaten that, some grilled chicken and broccoli with soy sauce. It’s not fancy but I feel pretty good about it and they like it.
Question 3- How do you balance exercise and eating and family needs?
My honest answer here is that I never really feel like I’m balancing it all. Something is always falling through the cracks…emails..phone calls..time with friends..something. What I find myself doing is prioritizing and depending on the day, the priorities shift but one thing I’ve noticed is that no matter how busy my work schedule gets or whatever else, I will ALWAYS find time for fitness. It may not be exactly how I wanted it to be but it will be there in some form or fashion. Prior to the kids, I was racing every weekend and had a pretty good mix of runs and triathlons. Since the kids, I think I’ve done 3 triathlons. I just had to re-prioritize it for the time being. I want to and will get back to it but it’s not a priority right now. *SIGH
Question 4 – What races are you doing this year?
Well, if we’re talking half marathons, right now I only have Go! St. Louis in April, OC Half Marathon in May and Rock ‘n’ Roll St. Louis in October. I have two more stops on my Rock ‘n’ Roll Tour pass that I haven’t decided on yet. I’m bummed I’m not going to run Chicago this year but it’s the same weekend as IdeaFest and I can’t WAIT to go to that. I really want to run the newest Rock ‘n’ Roll Race..Brooklyn in October, Savannah and Las Vegas in November but I would have to figure out the logistics first.
I also have another racecation to announce soon but it’s not a half (hint hint). Outside of that, National Stroller Running Day (#StrollerRun15) will most likely be sometime May this year so we will run/race for that.
Ok, so there you have it. Some of the questions that I’ve been asked lately. What questions do you have? What do you get asked a lot about?
