Two weeks ago I shared my kind-of/sort-of/not really race calendar. Most of those I hadn’t signed up for this post where I actually committed to a couple things. The Sperunking will just be fun. No real training needed but I do have a fun post to talk about how I’m gearing up.
So I’m going to try to give weekly updates on how the training is going. Here was last week’s recap:
It was a good week overall. Saturday I was motivated despite the way I felt physically. I cranked out a 1000 yards in the pool while E had swimming lessons and then attended a fundraising workout at Core3 in St. Louis. It was such a cool place. We broke the hour up into 30 min segments. The first was spinning but it was on a real rider, a bike that move like a real bike. It was pretty trippy but I definitely felt my core more engaged than in a normal spinning. Then we got to play on the surf boards for 30 minutes (see pics on instagram). It was such a great cross training day, I almost forgot about my pounding head. By later that evening though it all came crashing down. I headed to urgent care on Saturday night at 7:oo pm only to find out I’m the only 36 year old to get a double ear infection. I got a lecture about wearing earplugs when I swim, which I’ve been doing the past two Saturdays, given some meds and sent on my way.
I’ve taken three doses and am already starting to feel like my normal self. It’s funny what we as parents do and how much we put our kids priorities first. MiniE had a bad week last week and I just made sure she got what she needed which meant another doctor visit and rest and cuddle time…all the while my head was pounding, I was dizzy and just not in a good place. I kept trying to ignore it till I couldn’t anymore. And for it, I was awarded a double ear infection…fun!
Right now, the training has me keeping a pace anywhere between 9:20 and 9:30 except Wednesday. It scares me a little given that my target race pace is 9:05 but I’m trying to remind myself to
trust in the training
Follow it. Respect it and it will reward you.
On Sunday, I spent all day trying to talk myself into running the 7 miles but by 4:00 I realized it just wasn’t going to happen, I conceded and took the rest day. Luckily, my kids seemed to sense I was down for the count. They played so well together for hours with very little referring YEAH!
By yesterday though I was feeling better and decided to run at the gym. I ended up cranking out all 7 miles at the necessary pace. I felt so good and so proud and for a minute, I really felt like this goal was doable! I heard myself chanting “commit”. It might be my mantra this training cycle.
So I’m plugging away, making small progress, just trying to take it day by day. It’s the only way I know how. All this is leading up to hopefully a new PR at Go! St. Louis but I might a second chance the week following if plans turn out the way they are right now. Can you guess where?
OH! I have a second post up on St. Louis Magazine. Check it out here!
So tune in next week for week two and see if I’m still committed to the goal! 🙂
How are you doing in your goals?
