Let me address the rumors…I have been on twitter for YEARS…like almost 5 years to the month. In that time I’ve met a TON of amazing people, more specifically runners, mothers, fathers, triathletes, etc. You name it, we’ve connected. Somewhere along the way though all those amazing people and their messages got diluted. Either through trying to win giveaways, or other schemes that got me to follow. It got to the point where Twitter was no longer engaging. It wasn’t fun and the honest truth is I wasn’t on it very often. I would schedule tweets in the hopes that I could get a few clicks here and there but just didn’t like it as a way to engage. Too impersonal. In fact, I ranted about it three years ago.
Then I was introduced to this tool on the Google Chrome browser that lets you unfollow everyone and I started thinking.
What would happen if I unfollowed everyone and started fresh?
Sure, I know lists exist but I started finding myself with too many lists and I guess I’m getting old because I just want simple! I knew there was a good chance I would lose a lot of followers if I did but at this point, I don’t care. It’s not about the numbers for me anymore. I want to meet people with the same interests that I do. I want to learn from people that have the same challenges that I do. I want to feel inspired and inspire. AND I don’t want all that to get cluttered up with random crap!
I spent a few days thinking about it and decided to do it. I sat there staring at the screen…I could here my inner voices arguing with each other than the louder of the voices won..
Just do it already!!
So in one quick click…they were gone. Talk about scary. There’s no coming back from this. Once it was done it was done. I feverishly started looking for all my favorites, all my bloggers, all my runners, my St. Louis friends, all my worlds. I’ve found as many as I could but I’m sure I’m missing some so PLEASE leave your twitter handle here and I’ll follow.
Here are answers to some of the questions I’ve gotten so far:
- Yes, I have lost followers, a few hundred to be exact(ish). My thought is they weren’t in it for my content anyway.
- Yes, I did get some nasty tweets from people about why I unfollowed. I was a little shocked to see people follow so closely.
- Yes, I’m happy I did it. Do you know how nice it was to go on twitter during the Olympic trials and see almost nothing but people talking about it?! I LOVED IT. I engaged, we chatted. It was FUN. Twitter was FUN! That’s something that hasn’t been there in a long time.
- I don’t know if I’ve missed out on any opportunities because of my drop. Maybe…but I don’t care. I want brands to understand I have a relationship with the people I engage with. We have similarities and common interests…not mass crowds with little binding us together.
Blogging/Social Media have always been a hobby for me and always will be unless I hit the lottery. Until then, I’m finding ways to simplify and do it the way I want to…meeting all of you has and always will be the highlight of all of this so I want to make that easier to do. So sue me. 🙂
So use me as your social experiment. Learn from me. Ask anything you want.
Have you ever considered doing something like this? What do you think of twitter? Leave me your twitter handle please!
