It’s Speed Season in St. Louis & 5 Speed Workouts

Oh man!  Let’s take it all in!  The weather is fan-freaking-tastic right now and I just can’t get enough time outside.  It has been marvelously mild this month.  Normally, we’ve heated up by now so the fact that we had a weekend in the 70’s just felt like heaven.  I know what it could be like so I’m just enjoying it while I can.

You know what else is marvelous? That the kids have finally gotten to an age where I’m not responsible for every bodily function they have.  That means that I’m more capable of getting out and spending more time doing some of the things I did before they were born…like swimming, biking or just more running.  Yeah, now don’t get me wrong…I love my kids but I’m starting to smell a little independence.

Smell it?!

So now that it’s warmer, I’m heading back to the track.  Here in St. Louis, we’ve got some pretty amazing running stores and clubs.  Between Fleet Feet, Big River, The St. Louis Track Club and True Runner, you can feel like your back in high school track and get some work in every night.

So I did some research, looked at each program and decided that I am going to go for Big River’s session at Vianney starting this Tuesday night.  The best part of these guys is they put their workouts on their website.  SO…IF you were wanting to get faster but didn’t know what kind of workouts to do, you could technically go to BigRiverRunning.com or FleetFeetStlouis and look.  Some of what they are planning includes:5 Speed Workouts

  • Crazy 8s….8 x 800 with 7 minutes rest between
  • 5 x 1200
  • 14 x 200 (30 second rest)
  • 8 x 600 at 5K Pace
  • Ladder-1200m @ 5K pace (400m jog) + 800m @ 3K pace (400m jog) +
    600m @ 1m pace (400m jog) + 400m @ 800m pace (400m jog) + 200m @ 400m pace

All this work will help me get a sub 25 minute 5k and it might even help me achieve a faster tri.  Oh yeah, which reminds me, I’ve got my second tri this coming weekend if the weather holds out.  So let speed season commence!

Do you work on speed in the summer?

I am so jealous of your weather! It’s literally been raining for weeks on end here and is so depressing.

Hopefully your tri went well! As for speed work, I’ve been timid to jump in, slow and steady has been what I’m used to. I might try the crazy 8s mentioned as a start! Thanks for sharing the sites!
