Not the good kind. Last week I was bitten by not only the cold bug but the injury bug too. It couldn’t have come at a worse time. A week ago Sunday, was on a running cloud….I think I hit 25 miles the week before including the long run on Sunday….
But Monday I started feeling my throat close up and it went downhill from there. I took tons of Dayquil and Nightquil and willed it go away. Maybe in my medicated state, I might have turned funny and I could feel my back tweak just so. It’s so crazy…you can run tons of miles, you can lift heavy weights but it’s when you reach back to answer your phone at work that does it. What is that?!
I took the queues and hung up the shoes for the week. I didn’t get to ride Bike MS either which I was really bummed about. I had been fundraising for months. I was so looking forward to sporting this jersey. Oh well, our Jail and Bail was a success.
I’m trying to take it all in stride. I’ve said to myself more times than I can count “when it rains it pours” but the timing stinks. And if there’s a silver lining to all this, I definitely spent more time with the munchkins.
My momentum was at an all time high, my endurance was building nicely and WHAM!
So now that my back is starting to limber up again, I’m going to start off slow AGAIN, and find my way back to big miles. My fall halfs are just around the corner.

Back
Glad you are getting back on your feet! Sick sucks for sure. Do you work for ESI? I’ve been with thr company over 7 years.
The back issue has happened to me 3x. It’s never when I’m exercising, but always at really inopportune times. I bent down to put on a pair of heals 9 days before running the NYC Marathon and it completely went out! I spent every morning at the chiropractor the next few days and it made a world of difference. But I completely feel you there!
Ughh so sorry to hear — I hate being sick. 🙁 And I just had a similar back thing this week and it drove me crazy!! You’ll be back in no time!!
Ugh. Sorry to hear about the bug and the back tweak. I’ve had back issues all summer but today was the first time they completely stopped me in my tracks when I tried to run. Back pain sucks. I hope to see you at RnRSTL!
Oh no! Hope you make a full recovery quickly and your half marathons turn out to be your best yet! I too had to listen to my body recently after coming down with a virus when I was just hitting the top of my game. It’s frustrating, but a good discipline for us to learn for sure! I’m sure your kids enjoyed their extra time with you. 🙂
