It’s almost June…where did the year go? Oh yeah, the first half of my year was basically stuck in a storage container. 🙂 Either way, we’re settling in to living our lives as a family unit. We’re trying to find our routine and schedules and it’s starting to feel a little more “normal” or whatever that means.
Looking back at the year so far, it’s hard for me to believe I’ve already done a 5K, half and full marathon. I talked about the LA Marathon here but I forgot to talk about the St. Louis Go! that I did in April. It was fun, and freezing but really a non-event. It was a spur of the moment race with no real goals tied to it other than finishing.
But now that we’re in June and I’m finally able to think a little bit more clearly about my goals for the year, I’ve decided to add some races to the Race Calendar that really hasn’t existed in formality like it has in the past.
Oh yeah, that’s one thing that has really changed lately. When the kids were young, I could create a race calendar. I could plot out races months in advance and know with a good amount of certainty that I would get a chance to run them. What I’m finding out to be true as a mother of two school age children is that my personal goals are getting harder and harder to identify and go after. The reason?
Schedules
When the kids were young, there weren’t other schedules to compete with. Just ours. Now they are in to activities that are demanding time…prime time…time when I would’ve been training like a fend and as any mom would’ve I’m putting their priorities first. I’m not resentful but I am frustrated that my comfortable training schedule is being disrupted. (I would be lying if I said it wasn’t).
I know I should be getting up in the morning. That’s really my only opportunity to continue to pursue my own goals while letting them fulfill theirs. So at some point, the need will propel me out of bed and outside (right?). If I want it bad enough it will have to.
Anyway I digress. So when it comes to what races, I’m doing this year. The short answer is I really don’t know. I have to take the opportunities to race as they come and hope I’m prepared. Is it the right approach?
NOPE
But it’s my state of existence right now. So when I saw two opportunities coming up I had to grab them. So I’m announcing (not sure if you care or not but whatever) that I’m adding the following races to my calendar:
- Trifesta – Sprint distance triathlon (Saturday, May 26th) Yep, that’s this Saturday. It’s also my first chance to represent Team Coeur!
- KT82 Trail Race – (Saturday, June 2nd) With Lululemon! KT82 is an 82 mile relay trail race!
Trifesta is one I try to do every year since it’s in my hometown. 🙂 And the KT82 has been on my Race Bucket List ever since it was developed a couple years ago. Then it got REALLY cool when we decided to form a Lululemon team! So be ready for all the social media fun that will come from that! If you don’t know, the Lululemon crews are pretty awesome and I know we are going to have a great time!
So I’m pumped to know these two are coming! And I might have a couple more surprise races up my sleeve but, as is the norm, I won’t know till they actually hit the schedule which might be the week before. My strategy at this point is to train for everything that MIGHT come and just be as ready as I can. 😉
What races do you have coming up?
