Where Have These Moments Gone?

February 5, 2021 Leave a Comment

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Every now and then I like to pop on here to share a little more detail about life or dump some pictures and memories because at this point this is the closest thing to a baby book my kids have.

So where to begin? Did you know life as a parent is tough? Did you know it’s also so satisfying? Did you know that when they are babies you’ll be told a THOUSAND times to savor the moments?

Funny, when they get a little older (like 10 and 7) people either stop telling your or you’re just too busy to hear them. Regardless, I had one of those moments tonight that made me long for time to slow down.

We were driving home and usually when we’re in the car the kids watch a movie or something but tonight E sat quietly and asked to listen to my music. I told him that if I turn it on, there will be singing.

He said “Yeah, I know. That’s what I want.”

Backstory: when they were babies and I had complete control of the music in the car, I would listen to Jason Mraz on repeat. So they grew up listening to me sing songs like “I’m Yours”, “Lucky” and “I Won’t Give Up”. I mean all the time, to the point E learned all the words to all the songs and when he was about 3 would sing them with me. Now he’s 10.

Ok, back to the story, we’re driving home in the dark, my music is cranked and I’m just singing away. I look over and E is just staring at me, mouthing the words.

You guys, I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest. We got through a couple songs like that and I look over again and he’s asleep. I swear in that moment he could’ve been 4 and I could’ve been holding him.

It reminded me that one of two things happens when they get older…we either don’t have as many moments like this (compared to when they were babies) or we’re either too busy to notice or to let them happen.

So, in case you’re in the throws of middle school and craving those moments, I’m here to tell you they are there, if you find them, make them or let them happen. And when they happen stop and take them all in.
